On 20 April 2026, the Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata celebrated the International Chinese Language Day at Modern High School for Girls. Consul General Xu Wei and School Director, Ms. Devi Kar, attended the event and delivered remarks. The celebration brought together over 300 participants, notably Prof. Avijit Banerjee, Head of Cheena Bhavana at Visva-Bharati University. Also in attendance were principals, teachers, students, and parents from five schools offering Chinese language courses, including the School of World Languages and St. Joan's School.

In his remarks, Consul General Xu stated that the Chinese language has become a window for the world to understand China, as well as a vital bridge facilitating mutual learning between Chinese civilization and the rest of the world. Learning Chinese helps unlock a unique perspective to understand the world, build a bridge of China-India friendship, and converge the harmonious forces for a shared world. He expressed the hope that every student would dedicate themselves to learning Chinese and grow into envoys of China-India friendship. The Consulate General will continue to provide resources and opportunities for those interested in Chinese language and culture.
Ms. Kar remarked that language is not only a tool for communication, but also a manifestation of culture and the soil of seeds of friendship. She expressed her honour to co-organize this event with the Consulate General and her gratification that the Chinese language courses offered by the school have brought the two ancient civilizations of India and China closer together.
